About Us

We sold our first book online in October 2004 when the business was founded from a spare bedroom, selling a few unwanted second-hand books.

Not long afterwards, a local charity shop got in touch to ask whether we wanted their surplus books that they were being forced to dispose of as part of their general waste that was being sent to landfill. We agreed to buy these books from them and the fledgling business rapidly became an early pioneer of the circular economy (before it became a modern buzzword) as more and more charity shops began to sell their unwanted books to us.

Fast forward to today and a few bags bought from one shop has morphed into over 5 million books each year arriving at our warehouse from charities, local authority book banks, libraries and the public, all being saved from landfill. Not a single book is ever thrown away. If we cannot find a new home for a book it is recycled responsibly back through the paper industry.

Our commitment to reducing waste by reusing and recycling this many books is creating a more sustainable environment by saving 1800 tonnes of new paper or approximately 15000 trees every year!
